Welcome back to the blog, or welcome to the blog if you are new! After a week break from blogging and some time having a mental breakdown I am back to do the book review for the final book in The Lunar Chronicles, Winter. Sit back, relax, and get ready to hear my thoughts. Also there will totally be spoilers for the rest of the series in this one, I will try to label them though, so if you do not want to see spoilers wait until after you have finished the series to read this review!

Goodreads Summary

Princess Winter is admired for her grace, kindness and beauty, despite the scars on her face. She’s said to be even more breath-taking than her stepmother, Queen Levana… When Winter develops feelings for the handsome palace guard, Jacin, she fears the evil Queen will crush their romance before it has a chance to begin. But there are stirrings against the Queen across the land. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even find the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long. Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter claim their happily ever afters by defeating Levana once and for all?

My Thoughts

Winter is definitely my favorite book in the series, which is not something that I say often about final books. I feel like somehow authors usually drop the ball when the write the last book in a series. Marissa Meyer did not disappoint me, thankfully. I got everything I could have wanted, romances that I loved paned out, battle scenes, all of the plots wrapped up, all of my questions answered, AND no knife through my heart. I was expecting a knife to be stabbed into my heart towards the end based on something that happened, so I was glad it didn’t. I couldn’t go through another Veronica Roth Allegiant scenario again.

This book was loosely based off of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs….if I remember that story correctly. I wasn’t totally in love with the storyline of this book, but it wasn’t bad. I understand why Princess Winter was made into a total nut job, but I still didn’t love it. However, for being a head case she really was a pretty smart girl…just had to get her through the bleeding walls….Okay I have said enough about that, I really don’t want to spoil the story for you. There is just so much going on in this book, there is always something new happening.

Even though I loved this book there were a few things I didn’t like, and it mostly stems back to the issues I had with Cress. Since this is the fourth and final book in the series it is over twice as long as the first two books. There were so many plot lines that had to be wrapped up. Since each book, including this one, was based on a different fairytale the main plot of the book had to be set up, and then you had to follow along with everything from the other three books as well. I didn’t love having like 10 characters to follow, as well as all their individual story lines. There was so much going on that at times you wouldn’t read about a character for 100-200 pages and then you would have forgotten about them. There were a few times where Wolf was off doing god knows what and I stopped and had to think about where he was and why there was nothing being said about him. I also have a bone to pick with Wolf and Levana. That bitch is a bitch. If you have not learned that by now. WHY DID YOU HAVE TO GO OFF AND DO THAT TO HIM?!?!? YOU ALREADY RUINED HIS LIFE THE FIRST TIME!

Despite my two very small annoyances I did love the book. Cinder and Kai are the power couple I wanted (though I’m still not 100% sure how that all ended….but I will talk about that later on in the review), Scarlet showed me that she really was the sweat heart I thought she was (this goes back to the Wolf/Levana storyline that made me angry), Cress managed to make me like her just a little bit more than I did in her own book, and Winter well she was the start of the show, even if Cinder should have been. I know Cinder was the real Princess Selene but Winter really showed that she could have ruled Luna, if only they didn’t have such strict laws and superstitions.

I recommend this series so much. If you have time to read it PLEASE sit down and read it. Meyer’s did a fantastic job creating this world and balancing the retellings with the real stories. 5/5 starts, 100% recommend. Just make sure you read the other books first or you will have no idea what is going on. This series is going on my re-read list to be sure.

Now on to some spoilers for the book and the series! I know I don’t include these often but I just have so many thoughts.

Let’s talk Winter and her Lunar gift. I am still back and forth on my feelings about her being touted as being delusional and crazy. Clearly she was, but I don’t know how much I liked it, or disliked it for that matter. The whole plot line with her is based off the fact that if you don’t use your Lunar gift you will go crazy. The girl hasn’t used it in years and you go almost the entire book not really understanding why. There were about 100 times that they could have gotten out of trouble if she would have just used her gift. I kind of feel like it was over done. I mean the girl would turn into ice and not be able to move or breath and the walls of the castle would bleed. Those bits were a little creepy to me. I don’t know what I would have wanted her delusions to be, but I definitely was not prepared for those to be it. In the end we find out that she doesn’t use her gift because she tried to save someone from hurting themselves (if you have read you know what I am referring to) only to later find out that they were being hurt by someone else. (I refuse to speak the name of the dude because I HATED him, and he didn’t even have that many parts in the book) She wants everyone to be able to make their own choices and not to have their choices made for them. So I get it, it shows the strength she really has, BUT YOU COULD HAVE SAVED YOURSELF QUICKER HAD YOU USED IT!

Next we need to talk more about Wolf, because this was part that just ticked me off to no end. Why did LEvana have to have him turned into the even worse version of himself? Was she really too stupid to realize that that was not going to change his allegiance, no one wanted to be sided with her unless it suited them.I just constantly felt bad for Wolf in this book, and really throughout the entire series. He has to kill his brother, he finds Scarlet, then he is taken away from Scarlet, then he is turned into a horrible monster who shouldn’t have any control over his own actions, then he is used to try to fight his friends. In the end Scarlet does still love him and they end up together, so I am glad he got a happy ending but geez the guy could have been cut some slack at any other point. Oh and his mom dies, so he has no family.

Cinder and Kai were still my all time favorite couple in this book. There is absolutely no reason that should have been the case, but it was. The only thing I was a little confused about was what is actually going on with them. At the end of the book once Cinder is queen of Luna she has to stay there and Kai obviously has to return to New Beijing because ya know, he is the emperor. Someone just tell me the logistics of how this is going to work, that is all I need. I was also slightly shocked that Cinder said she didn’t actually want to be queen of Luna. Though Kai was cute asking if she would ever consider being empress someday. I hope for their sake that it all works out because they be cute. I would love it if Meyer’s would write even just a short story, or small companion book that talks about what actually happened with all of the main characters from the books (So basically Cinder/Kai, Scarlet/Wolf, Cress/Thorne, and Winter/Jacin). I would love just a little more time with these characters.

That is all I have for this book. So let’s talk about what is next for me in terms of The Lunar Chronicles.

I still have the two companion novels, Fairest and Stars Above, to read. I am giving myself a little bit of a break from the series because I really want to simmer on the last book before I jump into the companions. That is not something I do often, but I just feel like it is what is best for me. I am also moving next week (if the papers come so I can sign them -.-) so I don’t want to get too deep into books that I want to binge until after I move. Because I know myself and I will read those instead of pack. I am already having that problem with Animal Crossing. So for the foreseeable future there will be no more reviews on this series, but it will make a come back, hopefully within the next month or two.

Have you finished this series? What are your final thoughts on it? What other book series would you recommend? Let me know in the comments below and I will see you all on Friday!
